WAR VETERAN REMINDED OF MOST TRAUMATIC PERIOD OF LIFE EACH BIRTHDAY

Bill Shanklin celebrated his 104th birthday in style, surrounded by carers, fellow care home residents and a handful of family members that managed to find the time.

Bill was transported back to the 1940’s in the retirement home he’s been living in for the last twenty five years. Bunting and war-time decorations adorned the walls, whilst Vera Lynn songs played on loop.

Care home manager Brenda Connor, said “Bill has survived the second world war, Covid pandemic and more recently, severe Pneumonia. He sometimes gets a bit down in the dumps so we always like to remind him about the exciting wartime period.”

“I live in a perpetual state of fear and shock from seeing all my friends die in horrific ways,” Said Bill. “I’m reminded of this constantly and just once, I’d just like some quiet time, without any fuss.”

As a helium-filled inflatable Spitfire slowly floated past, Bill leaned forward and whispered “I just want to die.”
